After about 14 hours of traveling we finally arrived in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. We met the taxi driver who was there to pick us up and off we went to KAUST in Thuwal, about an hour away from Jeddah International Airport.
We passed two gates with security guards and had to get our temporary IDs before we were allowed to proceed. Our first stop was the Housing Department, where they handed us a folder of useful information such as maps, emergency numbers, bus schedules, rules, etc. We got our house keys then our driver dropped us off at our new home for the next 2-3 years.
I kind of knew what to expect since I’d spent some time researching online and even saw a video of the 2-bedroom house on YouTube. Well, for friends and family who are curious about what our new place looks like, check it out:
The house is really lovely and I always tell my friends that this is probably the best house we’re ever going to live in (well, I hope not). We’ve come a long way from living with roommates in a 30-year old apartment in Taipei. Everything here is western-sized as well. Even the mirrors are placed much higher that I only see above my shoulders in some!
We had brought two routers from Taiwan so we had WIFI about an hour into moving in, yay! One strange rule in KAUST houses though is that we’re all required to keep the airconditioner on at all times and at 23C. This is not that great since I don’t like to wear a jacket in my own home especially when it’s nice and sunny out!
We spent the rest of the day walking to the supermarket and going to the restaurants for lunch and dinner. Later we unpacked our 8 pieces of luggage, finally crashed into bed then woke up at 6am the next day (damn you, jet lag!)
