Today marks our first week living in Saudi Arabia. We’re still stuck on campus because we haven’t gotten our iqamas (residence permit) yet. I guess we could go Jeddah and just show our KAUST IDs in case anyone asks but Jose thinks its better if we wait for the iqamas.
It’s Friday and it’s already the weekend! So working days here are Sunday to Thursday and weekends are Friday to Saturday. Last night we went to see a movie at the KAUST movie theater–yes, a movie theater in a country where movie theaters are banned! It cost SAR5 or about NT$40 a ticket. We saw the Night at the Museum movie which was honestly, kind of stupid. The other movie showing was Tinkerbell and the Legend of the Neverbeast. So the selection isn’t that great. They are more geared towards kids and families so if we wanted to watch more interesting films we’d have to stream at home or something.
A few days ago Jose came home from work and told me that someone invited him to play soccer at the soccer field in our area. I said I’d go with him so off we went in search of this elusive soccer field. We walked past lots of small parks and empty tennis courts (wish our Taiwan tennis crew was here!). We passed rows and rows of identical houses and identical streets. We wanted to ask people for directions but there was no one to ask. This is really the first time I’ve lived in a place where it just seems so…empty. We eventually found it after 30 minutes of walking but to my horror, there was no toilet in sight. Not good for a pregnant lady. So I walked back home which took another 30 minutes. That concluded my exercise for the night.
