I was pleasantly surprised at work this morning when a bunch of deliverymen handed out boxes of these dates to everyone at the office.
Turns out they were not just cutting these down and throwing them away. KAUST actually collects, boxes then and gives them to the community. What a nice feeling to be eating something that grows right in your yard; something that you watched bloom and then mature.
I’m not sure what the variety is but they are really delicious! I didn’t really like dates before coming here but I can now say that I love them. And fresh ones are not as sickly sweet. I realized though that the unripe ones are so gross and astringent that you really have to wait until they turn dark/black and soft before enjoying them.
KAUST is full of date palms. I could be wrong but I think there are thousands of them here and there are many different kinds.
I took this photo outside Jose’s boss’ house and I’m thinking they are the same variety.
Thank you nature, and thank you KAUST!
