Over the weekend Jasmine and I were invited to her classmate Omar’s birthday party. Omar’s mom said she would love it if Jasmine could come because she’s so friendly and smiley whenever she comes pick her son up. Wow, this is the first time my daughter has actually helped me gain a friend 😀
I was told specifically that only moms and children were invited so Jose spent the afternoon at work instead. I wondered where Omar’s dad was sent off to for the afternoon. Do all husbands in the Arab world miss their kids’ birthday parties?!
I assumed that I would be the only non-Muslim there and I was right. Women came in the house dressed in abayas and headscarves and then take them off when they are sure there are no men inside. There was one lady who was dressed in a sexy short dress – you would never imagine it when they’re outside in their abayas.
Everyone was nice, friendly and chatty. The host even prepared a Palestinian/Arabian feast that was so good I almost fell into a food coma. Even Jasmine was eating the spicy sambusas (and was gassy later that night).
Over all it was just like any other kiddie party with the exception of it being all women and kids. I suppose at lot of parties are like this and I’ve heard that wedding parties are especially fun with all women being in one place and all men in another. I’m still waiting for Jasmine to get me invited so such a party in the future!
