I just wanted to share this photo that a friend had posted online:
When we were in high school my best friend, upon seeing a classmate’s mom’s big belly, congratulated her on being pregnant. She was not pregnant. Ooops.
Last year, Jose asked our neighbor, whose body was still recovering, “When is the baby coming?” She had already given birth one or two weeks before. Ooops.
Jose told me that he has a new lab mate who is a little on the big side. He made it a point to warn her that the chemicals in the lab were harmful to expecting mothers. I think he thought that he was very considerate but it made me think that she might’ve been offended especially since it turned out she was NOT pregnant. Ooops.
Compare these situations to my fellow committee members at the KAUST Photography Club, who are mostly British and extremely polite to a fault. Not one person had ever commented on my growing belly even up until yesterday. I am 40 weeks pregnant already! The only time they said anything was when I broached the subject in the first place.
Maybe we should all be polite and never assume? What do you think?
